Through a series of small studies and finished paintings, students will build confidence while refining their technical skills.
The course also introduces proper brush care, use of materials, and essential studio habits to support more independent work.
By the end of the class, students will have a collection of completed, ready-to-display oil paintings that reflect both their creativity and growing artistic understanding.

Ages 12 - 17 yrs old
This intermediate oil painting class invites students to create work inspired by subjects they enjoy—such as personal objects, pets, or photos—while developing a more intentional and refined approach to color. Through guided studies and demonstrations, students will deepen their understanding of color theory, color mixing, and how color relationships influence mood, atmosphere, and design.
Students will explore concepts such as value structure, “mother color,” and the role of reflective light and subtle hues within shadows that bring a painting to life. Techniques like underpainting and reductive methods will be introduced to build strong foundations, along with approaches to layering, texture, and working from dark to light.
A variety of oil painting mediums and fast-drying gels will be incorporated, allowing students to experiment with different effects and expand their technical range. Throughout the course, students will complete multiple small paintings while refining brushwork, learning proper material care, and developing strong studio habits.
By the end, students will have a collection of finished, ready-to-display work and a deeper confidence in both their technical skills and creative decision-making.
